How My Practice Works

How I Work With Clients Through the Divorce Process

Not all divorce clients are the same. There are meaningful differences among clients, issues, and cases, and those differences matter in how a case should be handled.

My Role as Counsel

A person getting divorced faces legal, financial and emotional decisions. I guide clients through those decisions by providing accurate legal advice and clear, thoughtful analysis. We sometimes discuss difficult or delicate situations, but my role is never to overwhelm. Rather, my role is to provide steady counsel and strategic guidance.

Here is what a client can expect:

  • I am directly involved in every aspect of the client’s case, from drafting the initial pleadings to drafting the final divorce decree
  • I am directly involved in preparing the client for evaluations, hearings, and other important meetings
  • I engage in steady communication by email and telephone
  • I provide clear explanations of tradeoffs that clients need to understand when they make important decisions.

Working With Outside Experts

Sometimes, good outcomes depend upon coordination with other professionals.
I have developed a close network of professionals that I can immediately rely on – either for a quick phone call, or for more formal involvement in a case. These include accountants, forensic accountants, real estate appraisers, business appraisers, and psychologists. Most divorce cases are not complex. But when they are, I coordinate the involvement of a team of experts as needed.

Keep in mind that most Minnesota divorce cases do not need the involvement of experts. Most cases are settled. Decisions about whether to hire an expert are made based on measured consideration of the cost and the potential benefit. The client and I discuss whether, given the issues at stake, it makes financial sense to work with an expert.
